Triple Chocolate Chunk Malt Cookies
Guess what I was doing at 3am last night?
I was baking cookies.
So let me tell you what happened, but first I’ll give you some background information about my situation.
My parents aren’t exactly supportive about my baking. They let me do it, and they buy me my ingredients and equipment, but they would really rather have me not bake. They don’t like eating what I make either. Actually, no one enjoys what I bake because everyone in my family is a savory person. And I, of course, have the biggest sweet tooth known to mankind.
I enjoy baking and everything but we can all agree that the best part of baking is sharing and where’s the contentment of baking when everyone I share with don’t appreciate what I make?
Indeed, if you feel frustrated for me, I thank you for your empathy. I feel that baking bloggers from around the world can relate to me better than my family. Thank goodness for the internet.
So anyways, going back to my little story, I was baking at 3am last night because I was craving cookies before I went to bed. The whole day yesterday, I was contemplating whether to bake or not but decided not to because I didn’t want my parents going, “YOU’RE BAKING AGAIN?!” So in the middle of the night, I thought it would be safe to bake some cookies and clean up before anyone figured out what I was doing.
Everything was going well. I successfully creaked up the stairs to the kitchen to sneak all the things I needed into the kitchen beside my room on the bottom floor. I make a couple of trips up and down no one even stirred in their sleep.
So I finally got to baking, and I was whipping up a storm downstairs with my flour, sugar and CHOCOLATE! I chose a recipe from Dorie’s book, who else should I go to for a knock-your-socks-off cookie recipe? Everything was rolling along extremely well, I was like a ninja! I mixed, I measured, I stirred and I ate a lot of cookie dough. It was really good cookie dough. I put the first batch of cookies in the oven and I patiently waited to indulge into some chocolatey goodness. After what felt like forever (I’m the least patient person ever), the cookies were ready to come out! I was so excited but then the most unexpected thing happened.
When I opened the door of my oven, I took the cookies out and though they looked nothing like the cookies in Dorie’s book, I couldn’t have been happier because I just really wanted a cookie. I closed the oven door and then it happened.
The fire detector went off.
I know, what are the chances?
I didn’t even burn anything, but I guess it was the proximity of the detector and the oven and the smell of the cookies caused it to go off. Note to self: fire detectors like cookies too.
I waved around frantically under the detector hoping to try to wave away whatever that caused it to go off.
Luckily, my waving madness worked and it stopped ringing.
Then I heard footsteps coming down the stairs.
It was my dad.
I ran back into my room and TRIED to pretend nothing happened, but I’m the worse liar ever.
I denied and denied even though it was SO obvious I was up to something.
And worse part, I couldn’t stop laughing. I laugh when I lie.
Long story short, I got off the hook. Actually, my dad didn’t even mention anything bout my baking. He just told me to always use the fan when I’m baking from now on (yea like that will help).
So after a long lecture bout fire safety from my dad, I finally got my cookie. By that time, I was exhausted!
That’s my story bout these cookies. I guess I should tell you bout the cookie itself now eh?
I didn’t have whoppers/malteasers on hand so I just subbed into white, milk, and dark chocolate chunks. The cookie part was soft and fluffy and it had a subtle chocolate flavour. I was a bit disappointed bout this because I like my cookies chewy and dense, but I enjoyed them nevertheless. The chocolate chunks gave these a kick! I love chocolate, in case you haven’t caught on yet.

Triple Chocolate Malt Cookies
adapted from Dorie Greenspan, Baking: From My Home To Yours
1 and 3/4 cup AP flour
1 cup chocolate ovaltine powder
1/4 cup cocoa
1 and 1/2 teaspoon baking powder
1/4 teaspoon salt ( I left this out cuz I used salted butter)
1 stick plus 3 tablespoons butter
2/3 cup sugar
2 large eggs
1 teaspoon vanilla extract
1/4 cup milk (I used skim)
1 cup each of milk, dark and white chocolate chunks/chips
1. Sift together flour, malt powder, cocoa, baking powder and salt. (I never bother sifting)
2. Beat butter and sugar together very smooth. Add eggs one at time and beat after each addition.
3. Add in vanilla, and mixture will look lumpy, but it’s all good.
4. Add in half of the dry ingredients and mix until flour is just blended in.
5. Pour in the milk and the rest of the dry ingredients. The batter will look like fudge frosting. Do not over mix.
6. Blend in chocolate by hand.
7. Drop onto baking sheet by rounded tablespoonfuls and bake for 11-13 mins leaving two inches of space between the dough. (Dorie didn’t say the temperature of the oven so I just went with 350 degrees F. Dorie did say to rotate the baking sheets from top to bottom and front to back after 6 mins though. I didn’t do this step)
